Description
Hornshav Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The exterior is roughcast over a rubble base, with a shallow-pitched slate roof and coped verges. Brick stacks are located at the right gable end, to the right of the cross passage, and at the left gable end where it connects to an agricultural wing. The original plan consisted of three cells and a cross passage, which was then enlarged by one bay to the south-east. Two wings were added to the rear, and a rebuilt stair turret was placed between them. An agricultural addition was constructed to the north-west.
The farmhouse has two storeys and a 2-1-3 bay front. It features wooden casement windows with leading, likely dating to the 18th century, although some were removed in the late 20th century. A full-height gabled porch, with a 2-light window and a small plaster panel in the apex of the gable, occupies the third bay on the left side. The porch has a square-headed opening and flag-stoned flooring with seats built into the inner walls. The end bay on the right side features 19th-century French windows with side lights. 20th-century windows are present on the two-bay agricultural wing attached to the left side.
The interior is understood to have been extensively altered in the 18th and 19th centuries, though it has not been inspected recently. It is said to contain a hall and inner room with moulded lateral stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a 20th-century grate, and fielded panels on some doors.
