Description

The bridge over the River Tone, located on the drive to Nynehead Court, is a former road bridge dated 1817. It was designed by Thomas Lee for W A Sandford. The bridge is faced with brick and grey Knapp sandstone, featuring ashlar coursed with V joints that create a strong vertical emphasis. It has voussoirs, a strongly moulded string course, and a parapet made of large dressed blocks that rise from the string course with chamfered tops.

The bridge has a plan with three arch spans and shallow elliptical arches. It includes cutwaters on both sides, although these are mostly submerged in mud. The square piers are abutting and topped with small square plinths, which likely supported sculptural decoration when the bridge was originally built. The soffit of the central arch contains an inserted York stone slab inscribed "W A Sandford 1817," while the soffit of the south arch is plain, and the north arch is not visible from the bank.

At the time of the survey in February 1985, the north-west pier was damaged, and the north-east pier was obscured by ivy. The string course showed damage in places and was also obscured by ivy, with a fissure noted in the south-west abutment. This bridge is recognized as a fine design that was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1818.
