Description
Spargrove Manor is a country house that has been converted into a farmhouse, situated on a moated site. It dates from the 16th century, 17th century, and 18th century, but was almost entirely rebuilt around 1870 in the Free Jacobean style, incorporating elements from the earlier centuries. The building features coursed rubble and ashlar construction, slate roofs with coped verges, and brick and ashlar stacks, along with two large finials on the front.
The manor has an L-plan layout with a symmetrical front range and a wing at the rear. It is two storeys high, with the garden front displaying three bays, where the outer bays project slightly beneath front-facing gabled pediments. The windows are tripartite sash windows with 8:12:8 lights, plain surrounds, and plain dividing mullions, although the sidelights of the upper window on the right are blocked. The central door opening is blank and has a semi-circular head with a key and imposts, above which is strap-work ornamentation in relief and a moulded stone frame featuring an achievement. There is also a secondary door opening on the right return, along with some 17th-century moulded stone-mullioned and transomed windows, iron casements, and leaded lights.
Inside, the manor contains work from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The ground floor of the rear wing features a notable 17th-century chimneypiece with bolection moulding and an overmantel adorned with swags, as well as a bracketed moulded mantel. There are also fine late 18th-century chimneypieces in the Adam style, some ornamental plasterwork, panelled doors with high-quality brass door furniture, and a former kitchen that includes a 19th-century iron range. The building was noted to be in a poor state of repair during a resurvey in April 1986.
