Description
Chapel Cottage, located about 100 meters west of Weston Farmhouse, is a building that was originally a chapel from the 15th century and was converted into a dwelling in the 16th century. A staircase was added, likely in the 19th century, and the windows were altered in the 20th century. The structure is built of random rubble and local stone, with quoins and a triple Roman tile roof featuring coped verges and a brick stack on the east gable end.
The layout consists of a single-cell chapel that has been transformed into a two-cell dwelling, with a central straight stair added later. The building is one and a half storeys high, featuring an inserted two-light dormer that rises from the eaves. On the ground floor, there is a two-light window with a brick surround to the left of the entrance, a 20th-century plate glass window to the right, and a lean-to porch made of concrete blocks with a half-glazed door. The right gable end has an early 19th-century two-light window situated to the right of the stack at first-floor level. The left return, or west end, has a blocked doorway with a chamfered Ham stone arch.
Inside, there is a straight stair at the entrance, and the kitchen displays stop-chamfered beams with step and run-out stops. The remains of a fireplace bay have been altered by the installation of a modern cooker, and there are remnants of a bread oven to the left, which was inserted in the location of the former stair. To the right, there is a recess that now serves as a cupboard. The first floor features a 12-compartment wagon roof with chamfered beams and a wallplate. This building originally served as the chapel of ease for the village of Weston, which has since been deserted.
