Description
Woolmington Farm Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a cottage. It dates from the late 16th century, with a wing added in the late 17th century, and has been altered in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of random rubble local stone and chert, originally rendered, with Ham stone quoins and dressings in the wing. It features a double Roman tile roof that is half-nipped to the left and has a central brick stack. The cottage has an 'L'-plan layout, consisting of two cells and a cross passage, which has been enlarged with the addition of the rear wing.
The cottage is two storeys high with a facade of two bays on the left and one bay on the right. All windows are 20th-century wooden casements set under wooden lintels. The first floor has two 2-light windows on the left and one on the right, while the ground floor has a 3-light window to the left of the entrance and one window to the right. The entrance features a plank door.
On the rear elevation, which faces the foldyard, there is said to be a 3-light hollow chamfer Ham stone mullioned window without a hoodmould. The interior, which has not been seen, is reported to contain stop-chamfered spine beams with step and run-out stops and scroll stops in the wing. The upper floor has three peaked doorframes, one of which is in a timber-framed partition leading to one of the three jointed cruck trusses in the original block that remain beneath the new roof. It is believed that the wing was built to house a dairy, with a lateral corridor between the wing and the main dwelling.
