Description
No 27 (West Braynes) and No 29 (East Braynes) is a house that has been divided into two separate residences. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. The building is constructed from red sandstone random rubble masonry, with some brick infill around the windows of the central block. It features a chamfered stone plinth on the left wing and central block, along with a wooden moulded cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with double Roman tiles, and there are brick and rendered stacks.
The house has a 'U'-shaped plan and stands two storeys over a basement on the left and central sections, while the right wing rises three storeys due to the sloping site. The facade has a 2:3:2 bay arrangement, with sash windows that include glazing bars. The first-floor windows of the left-hand wing have thick glazing bars typical of the early 18th century, while the ground floor of the left-hand wing and the first floor of the right-hand wing feature 20th-century sashes. The gables of the casement windows on the second floor of the right-hand wing extend through the eaves.
A Tuscan porch with a diamond pattern frieze leads to a double eight-panel door with a fanlight, dating from around 1800. This entrance is approached by a short flight of steps with swept-back cast iron railings. The right-hand wing also includes a squared-headed carriage entrance with a studded tongue and groove door, accompanied by a similar, smaller door beside it.
