Description
Bournes is a house, now divided into two, dating from the 16th century with later alterations. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble masonry and features a slate roof with a coped gable on the left side, a hipped roof on the right, and an original large stack on the rear elevation. The building is two storeys high with a gabled three-storey porch and has three bays. The windows are sashes with glazing bars, and there are tripartite windows on the ground floor set in slightly raised mortar surrounds from the early 19th century. The door, also from the early 19th century, has a segmental head with a keystone and pilasters.
The right return elevation has similar window features, a glazed porch, and a late 18th-century fanlight. Inside this wing, there is a mid-17th-century plaster ceiling that has been cut at the edges, depicting Venus and Cupid within a triple oval surrounded by roses and fleur de lys, along with the motto "Sine Cerero et Bacchus friget Venus" and geometric bands of shallow moulded decoration. This wing also contains two fireplaces with moulded jambs and wooden moulded lintels. The main block features stop-chamfered beams, a plank and stud partition, a two-centred arched doorway, and a fine four-centre arched door inside.
