Description
East Hill Cottage is a lodge built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a low-pitched hipped slate roof with deep eaves and a small gable at the center of the front. The building has axial and rear stacks with grouped diagonally set red brick shafts and square yellow clay pots, showcasing an Italianate-Tudor style.
The plan is L-shaped, with the main front range likely being double depth, containing two principal front rooms on either side of a central entrance hall. The service wing is located at the back of the right side, and there is a single-storey outshut in the angle. The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front with a pedimental gable at the center. It features two-light stone windows with Tudor arch lights and hoodmoulds. The central doorway has a Tudor or four-centred arch design, with a plank door and a later gabled open porch supported by thin posts. There is a small arrow loop panel in the gable. The rear elevation has not been inspected.
East Hill Cottage served as a lodge or garden bothy for the now-demolished East Hill House, which was formerly located nearby on East Hill.
