Description

Wallbridge Mills is a water-powered grist mill dating to around the late 17th century, with extensions added around the early 19th century. The construction is of coursed stone rubble with dressed stone quoins, and it has a Bridgwater clay tile roof with gabled ends.

The 19th-century mill section is rectangular, running along a north-south axis, with the water wheel located at the southern end. Later extensions are present on the north and south sides. A single-storey range, dating to the 19th and 20th centuries, connects the 19th-century mill to the earlier 17th-century mill, which runs along an east-west axis.

The three-storey 19th-century mill is a long range featuring various small windows; some have stone frames, while others have cambered brick arches. The north and south sides have later outshuts. The 17th-century mill at the northern end has wooden, 2 and 3-light, ovolo-moulded frame windows on its east end, along with a later gabled weatherboarded sack-hoist housing on its north front. The roof of this portion has partially collapsed.

The interior of the 19th-century mill retains its iron machinery, including a layshaft drive with two pairs of concrete stones. These stones are driven by bevel gearing on a lineshaft from the pitwheel and waterwheel located at the southern end of the mill. The lineshaft continues to a belt drive for the machinery above on the stones and bin floor; wooden bins and a hopper are on the stones floor. The interior of the 17th-century mill is inaccessible due to a partially collapsed roof.

Wallbridge Mill is situated at the confluence of the River Frome and Rodden Brook, on the edge of Frome.
