Description
Rodwell Manor is a manor house that has been converted from a former barn. It has origins dating from the 15th century to the 20th century. The building is constructed of dressed stone, thatch, and features coped verges, along with ashlar stacks that have moulded caps. Originally an open-hall house with a solar, it had a smoke bay inserted and later a floor added. In the 17th century, the house was extended and altered with a cross-wing, and there were further minor internal changes in the 18th century. The 19th and 20th centuries saw restoration and rebuilding in a style reminiscent of the 16th and 17th centuries.
The principal elevation is L-shaped and faces the roadside, comprising a single storey and attic with a total of six bays. The left bay features tall four-light moulded stone-mullioned windows on the ground floor, while the first floor has two three-light stone-mullioned windows set in dormer gables, along with three three-light casements that have thatched bonnet hoods. There is a continuous stepped string course above the ground floor windows, and the dormer gables are adorned with stopped labels. The inner face of the projecting wing to the right has a four-light moulded stone-mullioned window with a label on the ground floor, and the first floor features a two-light stone-mullioned window with a label, as well as a two-light casement. A doorway located in the second bay from the left has a moulded stone surround with a four-centred arch head, leading to a ribbed and studded plank door.
The rear elevation maintains a roughly conforming style with a projecting porch, although most features appear to be reproductions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The barn section includes inserted 20th-century metal casements, and all windows are fitted with leaded lights, most of which are reproductions. The interior showcases features that reflect the house's development from medieval times to the present, including a roof of jointed cruck construction, a smoke bay, two fireplaces with moulded stone surrounds, a ceiling with a moulded frame, and a door opening framed in wood with a two-centred arch head.
