United Reformed Church And Adjoining Hall To North

The United Reformed Church and adjoining hall, originally a Congregational chapel and schoolroom, dates from the late 18th century. It was reroofed in 1874, with a gallery added in 1883 and the hall later enlarged. The building features a gable end facing the road, flanked by single-storey porches to the north and south. The schoolroom is set back at the southwest corner. The exterior is rendered over rubble with a slate roof, coped verges, and a string course that forms a pediment cut by the apex of the east window. It has quoins and a rusticated base that sweeps up to the base of the east window, which is a four-light ogee-headed window with trefoil cusping and a rusticated surround. The building has two bay returns and an entrance through flat-roofed, single-storey porches with panelled double doors and sidelights; the south porch may be earlier and has an ogee-headed side light, while the north porch features a pointed arch. The adjoining hall is two storeys high with five bays and 20th-century fenestration. Inside, there are late 19th-century fittings, including cast iron columns that support the east end gallery, which has a wrought iron handrail and wooden panels. There is also a collection of late 18th and early 19th-century wooden tablets painted black and white to resemble marble and slate, similar to the material of the mid to late 19th-century tablets. The body of the church may date back to as early as 1718.
