Description
The Bishop's Hull War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921, with new plaques added in 1993. The memorial is made from Doulting stone and is positioned against a boundary wall. It features a cross with a sword in relief on the front of the shaft. The shaft is chamfered and has broach stops at its lower part. It is mounted on a square plinth, which also has broach stops, resting on a base with two deep steps; the rear quadrants of the steps are cut off to accommodate the wall.
The front (east) face of the plinth is inscribed with the words: "THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BISHOPS HULL WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919. For God, for King, and Country." The upper step of the base features three late 20th-century bronze plaques. The central plaque reads: "IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF BISHOPS HULL WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945. LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT THAT THEIR NAMES BE NOT FORGOTTEN." The left-hand plaque lists the names of those who fell in the First World War, while the right-hand plaque bears the names of those who died in the Second World War.
It is noted that the boundary wall behind the cross is not considered to have special architectural or historic interest and is not included in the listing.
