Description

Physicwell House, formerly known as Horwood Well House, is a house built around 1805. It is constructed from Doulting stone ashlar and features a hipped Welsh slate roof behind a parapet, with rendered brick chimney stacks. The design reflects the style of a Regency Villa. The house has two storeys and three bays on each face.

The west elevation includes a plinth, a small dentilled cornice, and a low parapet without coping. The central bay projects slightly and features semi-circular headed sash windows on the ground floor set in arched recesses, while above are 12-pane sashes in plain reveals. The central doorway has a pair of glazed doors with slim sidelights, topped by an ornate Regency semi-circular cast iron fanlight. There are some blind panels on the side elevations where windows were previously painted in.

At the rear, there is a semi-circular plain projection that houses a staircase, with a door on the side and a 12-pane sash window set on the curve. The interior has seen very little change and includes a good cantilevered stone staircase and fine doors, including one made on a curve to fit a curved partition in the center room.

The house was developed by the local Messiter family after the discovery of two mineral springs in 1805, one of which is located in the house. The Horwood spa offered a 'water cure' with baths, visitor rooms, a small chapel, and a nearby bank that opened in 1808 but closed in 1810. The Messiter family went bankrupt in 1819, leading to the sale of the building, which was then converted into a farmhouse with offices.
