Description
This is a farmhouse and outbuilding, likely dating to around the 16th and 17th centuries, with extensions from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of stone, partially rendered, with Bridgewater tile roofs and gabled ends. Brick chimney shafts rise from axial and gable-end stacks.
The original plan consists of a long range, with the western and central sections originally forming three rooms and a through-passage, with the main hall at the right-hand end, featuring an axial stack backing onto the passage. A projection at the rear of the lower (western) end was likely a stair turret. The right-hand end of the farmhouse is an early 19th-century addition. An outbuilding adjoining the south-west corner was probably a bakehouse and dates to the 17th century.
The front elevation is asymmetrical, with a 2:2:2 window arrangement. The right-hand section features a dressed stone facade with 16-pane sashes. The central section is rendered and has two-light stone mullion windows on the ground floor and a two-light casement above. The left-hand section has 12-pane sashes on the first floor and a doorway on the right. At the rear, the central section has a gable-ended wing with two ovolo-moulded mullion windows, and a stair turret projection to the right. The outbuilding attached to the front left (south-west) corner is a two-storey structure with a gable-end stack.
Inside, a heavy doorframe remains at the rear of the former through-passage and an ovolo-moulded doorframe is present in the former hall, along with exposed ceiling beams. The chamber above the hall contains a stone fireplace with a four-centre arch and a moulded plaster overmantel featuring a frieze with pomegranate designs, and moulded plaster devices in three corners of the ceiling. The lower (western) end of the farmhouse retains a chamfered cross-beam, while the rear wing has chamfered ceiling beams. The roof over the central section exhibits a cambered collar morticed to the principals. It is believed that manorial court meetings were historically held at this location.
