Description
The Coles Family chest tomb, dating from the 18th century, is located 6 metres south-west of the tower at the Church of St Mary in Bishop's Lydeard. It features stone made from blue lias, with a ledger top and a cyma recta moulded cornice. The corners are moulded, and there are two inserted panels on the north and south sides, with inscriptions in elegant script. The north side is badly worn, but the date 1774 is still legible. The east and west ends are plain, while the south side is inscribed to Mary, the wife of Francis Coles, who died in 1732, and her son who died in 1726. At the time of the survey in April 1983, the tomb was partially sunk into the ground.
