Description
The White Lion Inn is a public house dating from the 17th century, which was remodeled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of painted brick and features a pantile roof. The building has a single-depth plan that has been extended to a double-depth plan, standing two storeys high with an attic and a two-window range.
There are two raking dormers behind a parapet, and recessed panels above flat gauged brick arches that support 20th-century horned 8/8-pane sash windows. On the ground floor, panelled pilasters flank a slightly right-of-centre door, which is accompanied by a fascia with moulded consoles on either side. This area also features large 20th-century three-light windows with small panes. A 20th-century door at the rear is slightly left of centre, suggesting a possible former two-unit through-passage layout. The building is flanked on both floors by 20th-century horned 8/8-pane sash windows, with timber lintels on the first floor and slightly cambered brick arches on the ground floor.
Inside, there is a substantial chamfered cross-beam to the left of the door. The central former rear wall is approximately 1.5 meters thick and has been broken through to the right, where there was likely an open fireplace, as the room above has a boarded-up chimney breast above and slightly to the left of it. The attic is plastered, but the rough purlins are exposed and painted.
