Description
Three flights of stairs lead into a sunken garden immediately north of Montacute House. These garden stairs may date back partially to the 16th century but were remodeled in the 19th century. They are constructed from Ham stone ashlar. The east and west flights each have nine steps, while the north flight has seven steps, featuring unmoulded risers and treads. The side balustrades include plinths, turned balusters, and moulded copings, with square end piers topped with a variety of vase finials. The stairs are aligned with the axes of the pool and fountain nearby.
