Description
The Unicorn is an inn with late medieval or 16th century origins that was remodeled in the mid-17th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, with painted Ham stone dressings. The roof is covered with clay pantiles and features coped gables, along with brick and stone chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and four bays.
The windows are hollow chamfered mullioned types with labels, mostly consisting of four lights with horizontal glazing bar inserts, and there is a single light window between the first and second lower bays. The third bay includes a projecting gabled porch with a semi-circular archway, lozenge impost blocks, and a keystone, followed by a string course. Above this, there is a square bay window adapted from single lights on the return and a three-light window on the main face, which retains its label. A hanging sign is attached to the gable. To the east, there is a lean-to with an eight-pane sash window, and there are early 19th century and other extensions at the rear.
The interior has not been fully seen, but the eastern ground floor room features a chamfered crossbeam and an open gable fireplace. The Victoria County History mentions a smoke chamber behind and a seven-bay open roof with jointed cruck trusses, cambered collars, and chamfered arched windbraces. The Unicorn has been recorded as an inn since at least 1756.
