Description

Old Somerton Mill is a water mill and house with origins dating back to the 16th century, though it was largely developed in the late 18th century. The building is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, topped with plain clay tile roofs. The house features a stepped coped gable on the west side and a hipped roof on the east side. The mill has clay pantiles over stone base courses, with stepped coped gables adorned with ball finials, and includes brick and stone chimney stacks.

The structure is L-shaped, with the house standing two storeys tall and presenting a two-bay south elevation. It has a 2-light leaded iron casement window in beaded surrounds with mullions, and the lower windows have segmental arched heads. A six flush-panel door is set in a segmental arched recess between the windows. The mill extends southward from the east side of the house for two bays, rising to two storeys with an attic on the east side due to a sharp drop in ground levels. This side features a three-light leaded casement window and a three-centre arched opening for the overshot water wheel, which has been repaired and remains in place.

Additionally, there is a two-storey 19th-century lean-to on the east side, which includes a tall square plan tapered brick chimney on a stone base, topped with a moulded stone cap. This chimney likely served a steam engine that was known to be present by 1910. The interiors have not been inspected, and the milling machinery appears to have been removed. The mill was first recorded in 1513 and was referred to as Somerton Flour Mill in the 19th century, remaining in operation until 1935.
