Description

Somerton Court is a manor house dating from the 17th century, with modifications made in the early and late 19th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings, and features a Welsh slate roof set between coped gables, behind low castellated parapets, and stone chimney stacks. The building has a traditional form but exhibits Gothic influences.

It stands two storeys high with a basement, and the south elevation consists of seven bays. Bays two and six feature two-storey bay windows, while bay three includes a three-storey porch tower. There is a string course below the parapet, and the windows are hollow chamfered mullioned types with labels, consisting of three lights in bays one, three, five, and seven, and a configuration of one plus three plus one in bays two and six. All windows have decorative glazing bars, possibly made of cast iron.

The central porch has a semi-circular open arch with lozenge imposts and a keystone, which may be a reused feature from the 17th century, situated beneath a square label. Above the porch is a small sundial, a three-light window, and a square moulded plaque inscribed F/1A/1641, which commemorates James Fisher and his wife, set beneath a rose window. The tower has octagonal turretted corners.

The west side features less formal Gothic casements, with a pointed traceried arched window on the ground floor, and similar windows are found at the rear. Attached to the northeast is a small building with a bell turret and bell. The interior has not been seen, but the entrance hall is noted to be in character with the rest of the house.
