Description
Somerton Randle is a large detached house built in the late 18th century and extensively remodeled in 1846. It is constructed from local lias ashlar stone with Ham stone dressings and features a hipped Welsh slate roof behind parapets, along with stone chimney stacks. The house has two storeys and a north elevation that consists of seven bays, with the first four bays dating from the 1846 addition. The exterior includes a plinth, band course, cornice, and a shallow parapet. The main block has 12-pane sash windows in plain openings with flat voussoired arches, while the windows in bays five, six, and seven are larger. Bay six projects and features a Ham stone Tuscan open portico supported by four columns on a two-step base, complete with a full entablature. This portico frames a pair of doors with a radial glazed rectangular fanlight in an architraved surround. Above the doors is a Venetian window, and the gable pediment displays a panel with Adamesque decoration. Bays one to four have 9-pane sash windows set lower, with bay four cutting into the main block. There is a glazed door in an architraved surround under a hood mould at the lower bay one. The return elevation on the west side has two matching bays. The south garden front also has seven bays, featuring 12-pane sash windows above and 15-pane below, with French doors in bays two, four, and six. A later single-storey extension extends southwards from the east corner. The interior has not been seen.
