Description
The Grange is a detached house dating from the mid-19th century. It is built of local lias stone ashlar with Ham stone dressings, featuring clay pantiles between stepped coped gables and ashlar chimney stacks. The building has a complex plan, with a north elevation of six bays, where bay one projects for two bays and bay four is a projecting two-storey porch. The windows are large casements with horizontal glazing bars, mostly two-light, set under plain stone lintols. Bay four exhibits particularly ornate detailing including a plinth, string, and band courses. An open semi-circular archway leads to a partially glazed door, and above, a six-pane sash window sits within an architraved surround, mirroring the detail of the return windows. The south elevation has three gables with matching detailing. A rainwater stackhead is dated 1863, possibly indicating an extension.
Inside, the house includes two chamfered ceiling beams, one with stepped run-out stops, along with some 18th-century doorcases. Two adapted pilasters within the stair lobby arch suggest the incorporation of earlier architectural fragments, possibly from the same site, although detailing is not consistent throughout the house. Numerous 19th-century fittings and furniture remain in the servant’s wing. Attached outbuildings are largely unaltered but do not possess particular architectural interest. The building is now part of Millfield School.
