Description

The Evenlode is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, enlarged in the 17th century and with late 19th-century window replacements. It is constructed of roughcast over rubble and cob, with a distinctive wall break forward between the first and second bays on the left side. The roof is thatched and hipped to the left, with a 20th-century brick start marking the end of the original dwelling. Brick stacks are located to the right of the through passage and to the right gable end.

Originally a 3-cell plan with a cross passage and outshot, the farmhouse was extended one bay to the east, formerly used as a cheeseroom. The front has two storeys and a 1:2:2 bay arrangement. A 3-light, chamfered wooden mullion window is situated on the first floor of the end bay to the left; the other windows are 19th-century 3- and 4-light designs. The ground floor features a 20th-century plank door with a side light on the left side, and one 3-light window to the left and two 6-panel windows to the right of the entrance door, which has inserted lights. A random rubble outshot is present.

The interior is not publicly accessible but is reportedly home to evidence of a raised cruck root, chamfered beams, and a chamfered bressumer to the former kitchen fireplace. The fireplace is believed to have been rebuilt, incorporating features such as a bacon curing chamfer on the right and a spice cupboard within the return wall near the entrance to the former cheeseroom.

Until 1967, the Evenlode served as the farmhouse for Willey’s farm, and remnants of the former farmbuildings are still visible to the north and southwest.
