Description

The garden pavilions, fountain, stairways, and terrace on the south side of Quantock Lodge were built in the mid to late 19th century. These features create a pleasant area that includes two garden pavilions facing each other across a level formal garden. The pavilions are constructed of ashlar stone and have balustraded parapets, gargoyles, and domed lead roofs topped with elaborate finials. Each pavilion is square in shape and features large two-light mullioned and transomed windows, making the walls predominantly glass. The central doorways have ogee-shaped canopies, with the west side leading to plank doors that have medieval-style ironwork, and the east side leading to half-glazed doors. Each pavilion has a flight of steps descending from it.

To the south, between the pavilions, the ground rises to a terrace that has a pierced stone parapet and a flight of curving stone steps on either side. A fountain with a circular bowl is set beneath an archway, with Latin text above it. There is also a further flight of steps leading onto the formal garden. The pavilion on the west side has a chapel wing at the rear, which has been significantly altered and is now used as a theatre, but it is not of special interest.
