Gatehouse and flanking curtain walls; to Quantock Lodge, part of Quantock School. 1857 by Henry Clutton for Henry Labouchere, the lst (and only) Lord Taunton. Snecked local stone, freestone dressings, eaves bands, banded tile roofs, coped verges, crenellated returns (some merlons missing at time of re-survey January 1985), large floral finials (one missing and one broken at time of re-survey), 2 tall polygonal stacks with moulded caps. Eccentric fusion of neo-medieval styles. Single storey and attici entrance portion with front facing gable; broad segmental -headed carriageway, to each side coupled angle buttresses with offsets; lesser inner archway in conforming style with narrower pedestrian gateway; stone ribbing; oak gates with iron grilles. Gable face with 2 barred leaded windows flanking a canopied achievement. Lodge to left, 2-light stone-mullioned window with drip and quatrefoil window with leaded lights. Section of curved curtain wall to each side. An important roadside feature.
