Description

The Gatehouse to Quantock Lodge, along with its flanking quadrant walls, is a gatehouse built in 1857 by Henry Clutton for Henry Labouchere, the 1st (and only) Lord Taunton. It is part of Quantock School and features snecked local stone with freestone dressings, eaves bands, banded tile roofs, coped verges, and crenellated returns, although some merlons were missing at the time of the re-survey in January 1985. The structure has large floral finials, with one missing and one broken at the time of the re-survey, and two tall polygonal stacks with moulded caps. The design is an eccentric fusion of neo-medieval styles.

The gatehouse is a single storey with an attic entrance portion and a front-facing gable. It includes a broad segmental-headed carriageway, flanked by coupled angle buttresses with offsets. There is a lesser inner archway in a conforming style that features a narrower pedestrian gateway, stone ribbing, and oak gates with iron grilles. The gable face has two barred leaded windows flanking a canopied achievement. To the left of the gatehouse is a lodge with a two-light stone-mullioned window, a drip, and a quatrefoil window with leaded lights. Each side of the gatehouse is bordered by a section of curved curtain wall, making it an important roadside feature.
