Description
The shelter shed at Parsonage Farm is a cattle-shelter built around the early 19th century. It features random rubble stone for the rear and end walls, stone columns for the front (east and north) elevations, and a hipped roof covered with double Roman tiles. The structure is single-storey and L-shaped in plan, consisting of four bays on each range, likely facing a former yard.
The north and east elevations are open-fronted, supported by equally spaced circular stone columns that create a colonnade beneath the hipped roof. The rear (west and south) elevations and end walls are constructed of rubble stone, with a doorway located in the rear wall of the west range. Inside, the shed has pegged collar and tie-beam trusses, each featuring a notched apex for the ridge piece, along with a single row of trenched purlins on each side.
This shelter shed is part of a group with the former farmhouse at Parsonage Farm, which mainly dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with some 19th-century alterations. A barn that was once attached to the east gable wall of the shelter shed collapsed in the late 20th century. The farm is situated on the site of a medieval and post-medieval rectory that was transferred to the Mayor and commonalty of Bristol around 1541. The city corporation sold the estate to a tenant in 1840.
