Description
No. 31 High Street is a house dating from the 16th to 17th century, with modifications made in the late 19th century. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble and features a single Roman tile roof with two brick stacks. The house has a cross passage plan and is single storey with an attic, consisting of three bays that contain two and three-light casements with horizontal glazing bars, two of which are in half dormers.
The central door opening has a plank door with a wooden lintel. There is a wing at right angles to the rear, which is now an outbuilding but was likely another dwelling in the past, as indicated by the remains of a large ridge stack. Inside, the room to the left on the ground floor has a moulded compartment ceiling, a door opening with a four-centred head, and a fireplace set in a massive freestone surround with a deep lintel. The room to the right on the ground floor features two stop-chamfered ceiling beams. The former house at the rear has remains of a four-centred head stone fireplace, and there are two principals of a cruck roof screen on the first floor.
