Description
The Woolverton war memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1926. It is made of Portland stone and stands approximately 4.5 meters high. The memorial features a cross of sacrifice, with the cross and octagonal shaft adorned with a relief carved inverted sword, all resting on a moulded foot. This foot is positioned on an octagonal plinth, which is elevated by three narrow stone steps.
The plinth is inscribed on three sides in a Serif font. The front face reads: "ERECTED / BY THE / VILLAGERS OF WOOLVERTON / TO THE SACRED MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND / FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918." The right face commemorates a local soldier who died in the war, stating: "WALTER HAINE / 11TH. BN. K.R.R.C. / FRANCE / 1916." The left face carries the inscription: "THESE MEN OF OURS / UNSELFISH, UNAFRAID / WENT TO THE WORLDWIDE FIGHT / FORGET NOT HOW THEY FOUGHT / AND HOW WE PRAYED / FOR ENGLAND AND FOR RIGHT / HENRY NEWBOLT."
