Description

This is a cottage, likely originating in the 15th century, with significant additions and alterations made in the early 17th century, the 18th century, and the mid-20th century. The walls are rendered over rubble, with a whitewashed rubble rear extension. The roof is thatched with a gable facing Mount Street, and has a pantiled extension. A brick stack is located to the left of the centre, with a rear gable and a stack rising from the eaves on the right return.

The cottage’s core is an open hall that was extended to the rear. It has one and a half storeys. A 3-light arched wooden casement is in the gable facing Mount Street, with a similar ground-floor casement to the right, featuring 2 lights. A casement of 2 lights is on the left-hand side. The ground floor projects forward approximately 500mm. The entrance is on the left return.

The interior is reportedly a medieval hall house with an inner room, and a solar that juts out above. The ceiling dates probably to the early 17th century and the rear was enlarged in the 18th century. It is said to contain three pairs of jointed crucks, chamfered beams, and wattle and daub infill.

An adjoining red sandstone rubble wall, approximately 2 metres high, runs along the north-north-east side of the property. It has pantile coping and a gable over a pointed arch opening. It contains a plank and stud door and sweeps up to square gatepiers, which were obscured by ivy at the time of survey in April 1983.
