Description
The Congregational Church, built in 1814 and altered in 1898, is located on the south side of High Street. It stands on the site of the Ship Inn, where meetings were held during the 18th century. The church is two storeys high, featuring an ashlar front facing the street with a bowed central bay. It has a cornice and parapet, with two round-headed windows and a central Venetian window on the first floor. The windows have rounded tracery in their heads and there is a plinth at the base. The porch is flanked by round-headed niches on the ground floor and features a heavy entablature supported by two Corinthian columns and two half-columns, with low balustrades in between. The doorway is bowed in plan, with an elliptical head and a traceried fanlight. The church, along with Nos 70 to 74 (even), forms a group.
