The Rose Tower, 440 Metres West Of Barwick House

The Rose Tower is a folly located 440 metres west of Barwick House, built around 1775. It is constructed from local stone rubble with Ham stone ashlar. The structure features a circular podium that is approximately 4 metres in diameter and 0.6 metres high. On this podium stands a hollow circular drum, about 4 metres high, which is pierced with three pointed arches and has bands of rectangular openings spaced about 1.25 metres apart. The upper 2 metres of the drum is made of fine ashlar and topped with a ball finial, bringing the total height of the tower to approximately 20 metres. This tower serves as the west boundary marker of the Barwick Park estate and was likely erected by John Newman. It is the most impressive of the four follies aligned along the cardinal points through Barwick House and is featured in three paintings dated between 1770 and 1780.
