Description
The Priory is a house, with a possible history as a secondary dwelling or courtroom, dating to the late medieval period. It was significantly altered and refurbished in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The construction is of coursed rubble with freestone dressings, and it features fishscale tile roofs with crested ridges and coped verges. Octagonal ashlar stacks are present, paired to the right gable end.
The house comprises two open halls set at right angles to each other, forming an L-shaped plan. Both halls were later floored and refaced in a loose Gothic style during the late 19th century. It is a single-storey building with an attic, displaying a 1:3 bay layout and four gabled half-dormers to the first floor. The building features shaped gables with finials and 3-light stone-mullioned and transomed windows, each light with a 4-centred arch head and leaded lights; five similar windows are on the ground floor. A porch is centrally positioned with a 4-centred outer door opening, a drip moulding, and carved spandrels.
Attached to the left of the front facade is a short section of high rubble wall, incorporating a doorway with a pointed archway. A pair of tall ashlar gate piers, with moulded caps and ball finials, flank the wall.
Internally, the building retains fireplaces, compartmental ceilings, and a roof of early interest.
