Description

Minehead Railway Station, built in 1872 and extended around 1897, is constructed from red sandstone rubble with freestone dressings and features a continuous crested plain tile roof. It has four ridge stacks, which are offset below diagonal shafts, with one stack remaining truncated. The building has a rectangular plan and is designed in the Italianate Romanesque style.

The exterior is a single storey with an eight-window range and a continuous chamfered plinth. It features semicircular arched openings with chamfered long and short dressings and keystones. The right side of the station has a symmetrical four-window range and an almost full-height gabled porch that includes five open trusses and tie bars, which is corbelled out over double doors topped by a semicircular overlight. This porch is flanked by paired and single windows. The paired windows are separated by round columns with cushion caps and have plate-glass sashes. To the left, the 1897 extension has two full-height openings with segmental arches. The booking office, located at the far left, is made of tongued-and-grooved wood on a higher rubblestone plinth and is articulated by panelled pilasters with moulded capitals. Both the platform canopies and the booking office feature fretted wood fronts.

Inside, the station retains its original joinery and fireplaces. The arrival of the railway was crucial to Minehead's development as a resort. The Minehead Railway Company accepted a tender for the station's construction on 27 May 1872. In October 1882, the Great Western Railway converted the entire line from Taunton to Minehead to narrow gauge in a single weekend. On 1 July 1897, the Minehead Railway merged with the Great Western Railway.
