Description

2, The Avenue is a 15th-century court room, later adapted as a house and now a shop, located in Minehead. The building is constructed of rubble stone with a plain tile roof and originally comprised three storeys. It features a two-window range to the front, which faces The Avenue. A small, oak-framed two-light window sits at the apex of the gable, and a larger, similarly styled window is positioned on the first floor, both featuring cusped heads to the lights. Large buttresses flank a 20th-century shop door. A return side, facing Summerland Road, contains a 15th-century oak door frame with a chamfered four-centred arch and foliate spandrels, leading to a planked and studded door fitted with strap hinges. The interior retains some original features, including a hollow-chamfered beam on the ground floor and a tie beam with mounting points for removed joists. The roof structure was replaced in the late 19th century. Historically, the building served as a court room and subsequently as the offices of the Luttrell Estate, holding significance as a place of local administration.
