Description

Old Bridge House is a detached house with origins dating back to the 16th century, and it has been altered in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed from Ham stone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof between coped gables, with the north-west gable topped by a finial and weathervane, along with brick chimney stacks. The house has a 'T'-plan and stands two storeys high with attics. The south-west elevation consists of five bays, where the second bay projects to form a two-storey porch, and the fifth bay is the end gable of a south crosswing.

The building has a plinth and leaded mullioned windows set in simple architraves, all of which are two-light windows with rectangular leaded panes and iron-framed opening lights, found in bays one to four, including the upper level of the porch. The attic window in bay five features an ovolo-mould in a wave-mould recess with a label. The doorway to the porch has a segmental arch with a beaded surround, and above it is a coped gable with a finial and carved crown. The north-west gable includes another ovolo-mould window at ground level, also with a label.

The south-east elevation mirrors this design with three bays, all featuring beaded mullioned windows with transoms. The centre window is set at mezzanine level and is deeper than the others, located directly above a boarded door framed in a beaded surround. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to have a modified hall-house plan, with a cambered-arched chamfered hall fireplace and matching doorway, as well as some stud and panel partitions. The house is noted as 'a pretty house' and was built by Brome Johnson, who died in 1586.
