Description

Willett House is a house built around 1816, with alterations to the east front made in the mid-19th century. It was designed by architect Richard Carver for Daniel Blommert. The building is rendered over rubble and features a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves, a soffit board supported by slender brackets, and rendered stacks at the center and rear.

The house is double-piled and has two storeys with a façade consisting of two bays, one bay, and two bays. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has 15-pane sash windows. The center bay projects slightly and contains a three-bay Greek Doric screen made of ashlar sandstone, with pilaster responds. This is approached by a flight of three marble steps leading to a recessed 20th-century half-glazed door, flanked by sidelights with marginal glazing bars and a fanlight, all in the Adar style, with a frieze and dentil-moulded cornice above.

The right return of the house features three bays and one bay, with a dentil-moulded cornice and quoins. There is a full-height canted ashlar sandstone bay on the left, with 12-pane sash windows on the first floor and 15-pane sash windows on the ground floor, where the glazing bars are only on the inner face of the glass. A tripartite window is located on the right, all within lugged surrounds. At the rear, there is a lower service wing with a three-bay roof.

Inside, the house was restored in the late 20th century and features moulded plaster cornices, imported fireplaces, and late 17th-century style panelling in the dining room. The staircase is designed in a "T" plan and has cast iron balusters with decorative enrichment.
