Description

The farmhouse at Higher Vexford dates to the early 16th century, with later additions and alterations in the 17th century and around 1800. It is constructed of red sandstone rubble, with a rendered block to the right, and has slate roofs. A lower, independently roofed block sits to the right. The property features a large rendered stack and a rendered brick stack at the left gable end and to the right of the cross passage. Originally, the layout likely comprised an open hall, later ceiled to create a three-cell plan with a cross passage. A parallel range was added to the rear.

The two-storey, four-bay-by-one-bay front features late 19th-century three-light casements in segmental-headed openings. An early 19th-century two-light leaded iron casement is found in the end bay on the right. The entrance is located in the second bay from the left, leading to a gabled porch with a plank door. The garden front showcases 12-pane sash windows.

Inside, the most significant feature is the survival of two pairs of original jointed cruck trusses within the lower, independently roofed block on the right, now used as a store. A large open fireplace is present with chamfered beams and irregularly placed chamfered joists to the right of the cross passage.
