Description
Plash Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It features roughcast over rubble and a pantiled roof with overhanging eaves and bargeboarded gable ends. There is an external stack on the right gable end and a brick stack on the cross wing to the left. The original layout is not clear without an internal inspection, but it likely consists of a two-cell plan with a cross passage facing north, and a stair turret addition at the southwest corner that continues as an outshut. The northeast gable end was raised and a cross wing added in the mid-19th century.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with two bays, and the higher gabled cross wing is on the left, where the earlier roof line is visible. It has a two-light steeply chamfered mullioned window and a gabled dormer featuring three plasterwork fleurs-de-lys and a central plaque that is not legible. Below this, there is a 19th-century three-light casement window. On the ground floor to the left, there is a gabled single-storey shed with one bay, possibly made of cob, and a small glazed opening to the left of the entrance, with another end bay to the right. The centre left has a gabled 20th-century porch with a slate-hung gable end and a plank door.
On the right return, there is a three-light hollow chamfered mullioned casement window to the right of the stack, and a gabled projection beyond it with a catslide roof on the south front. The external plasterwork is an uncommon survival in the county. Plash Farmhouse is also known as Gardeners Cottage.
