4/32 Group of 4 monuments in churchyard, about 14 metres south of east bay of nave, Church of St. John the Evangelist and All Saints

GV II

Group of one chest tomb and three headstones. (a) Chest tomb 14 metres south of nave. Early C17, Ham stone. Base buried; single-panel ends and 2-panel flanks having ovolo-mould borders, the flanks having fluted pilasters, no frieze; cyma-recta coving to heavy tipped top. Commemorates Mary Bonning, widow, died 1606 - if the tomb is of this date it was very advanced in style. (b) Headstone at north-east corner of Bonning monument. C19. Ham stone, size 900mm wide x 1360mm tall x 110mm thick; shouldered segmented top, chamfered back: flat front with incised panels having 3-centre arched tops. Commemorates members of Paull family, probably erected c1817. (c) Headstone 1.5m north of north-west corner, Bonning monument: C18. Ham stone, size 660mm wide x 900mm high x 100mm thick, chamfered back: segmented top with scrolls to sides framing an angel-head; carved frame to simple panel. Inscriptions worn, (d) Headstone 2m north of north-west corner, Bonning monument: C18. Ham stone, size 900mm wide x 100mm high x l00mm thick, chamfered back: shaped near flat top; front has 2 semi-circular arched panels with egg-and-dart arches, floral centre and side-drops, and above a skull, crossbones and hourglass. Commemorates Thomas ------ died 1740.
