Group of 4 Monuments in Churchyard About 3 Metres South of Chancel, Church of St John the Evangelist and All Saints

This listing describes a group of four monuments located in the churchyard about 3 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St John the Evangelist and All Saints in Kingstone Village.

The group consists of two chest tombs and two headstones. The first chest tomb, dating from the 17th century, is made of Ham stone and has its base and body partially buried. It features a plain north flank and east end, while the west end displays a proudstanding plain shield. The south flank has two semi-circular arched panels and a cyma-recta coving leading to an almost flat top. This tomb commemorates Richard, with the death date below ground.

The second chest tomb, located immediately east of the first, is also likely from the 17th century and made of Ham stone, with its base and body part buried. Each side has one panel framed with a bolection-mould, and it has a moulded coving leading to a shallow hipped top. This tomb commemorates Ann, the wife of Christopher Budd, with the death date buried.

The first headstone is situated 1.5 metres south of the chest tombs, dating from the 18th century and made of Ham stone. It measures 900mm wide, 1250mm high, and 110mm thick, with a chamfered back and a shaped top featuring two angel-heads in semi-circular arches. The heads are notably proud of the stone's face, with an hourglass between them and scrolls on the sides. The single panel has a carved border, but the inscriptions are not readable.

The second headstone is located 3.5 metres south of the chest tombs, also from the 18th century and made of Ham stone. It measures 750mm wide, 1000mm high, and 100mm thick, with a shaped head featuring two semi-circular arched panels with angel-heads and scrolls on the sides. It has two panels with carved frames and a central drop, but the inscriptions are not readable.
