Group Of 3 Monuments In Churchyard, About 4 Metres South Of Tower, Church Of St John The Evangelist And All Saints

This is a group of three monuments located in the churchyard, about 4 metres south of the tower of the Church of St John the Evangelist and All Saints. The group includes an early 19th-century chest tomb and two 18th-century headstones.

The chest tomb, made of Ham stone, features a base that is buried, with one fielded panel on each face and three-panel pilasters on the flanks. It has no frieze and a shallow hipped top. This tomb commemorates Jane D-----, who died on January 18.

The first headstone is located one metre north of the northeast corner of the chest tomb. This later 18th-century headstone, also made of Ham stone, measures 1000mm wide, 1200mm high, and 110mm thick. It has a chamfered back and a shaped top that frames two angels, with an hourglass between them and scrolls on the sides. The carved frame features a tasselled cord center drop and commemorates Mary Paull, who died in 1779, and Ann Paull, who died in 1780.

The second headstone is situated 1.5 metres south of the stair turret. This 18th-century headstone is made of Lias stone and is a plain slab with an incised semi-circular arched panel of an unusual type, likely early. The inscription on this headstone is unreadable.
