Description
Tout Hill House, now known as Our Lady Convent Primary School, is a house dating from around 1795. It is constructed from local stone that has been cut and squared, with ashlar dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate, featuring a coped gable on the east side and a hipped return on the west. Brick chimney stacks with moulded stone caps adorn the structure.
The building has two storeys with attics and consists of four bays. It features a plinth, rusticated quoins, a cornice, and a tall plain parapet. The windows are 12-pane sash types set in architraved surrounds. The entrance is located in the third bay and includes a six-panel door set within a semi-circular sub-arch, topped by a Regency style cast iron fanlight. This entrance is flanked by fluted Doric pilasters and an open pedimented hood. There are pitched roof dormer windows located behind the parapet.
The west elevation matches the four-bay design of the front, although the third bay is blind. The house was built after 1793 but before 1797 by Robert Gapper junior, as noted in G. Sweetman's history of Wincanton from around 1904. The interior has not been seen.
