Description

The William Coles Monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, approximately 24 metres south of the south porch of the Church of St Mary. The earliest dated inscription on the tomb is from 1821, found on an inscribed brass plaque on the south side, although the chest itself dates from the 17th century. It is made of dressed Ham stone and features a moulded plinth. The rectangular chest has two recessed panels on each side, with additional recessed panels on the east and west ends. The tomb is topped with a massive hipped slab that has an ogee moulding around its lower edge.
