Description

The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly a rectory, built in the 17th century, with a refronting in the late 18th century and further additions made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of random rubble with flush dressed quoins and features a stone tile roof, a dentil eaves cornice, and ashlar end stacks with moulded caps. The building has a symmetrical classical facade and is designed in an L shape, with the original 17th-century dwelling complemented by an 18th-century crosswing refronting.

The house has two storeys and attics, with three bays that include tripartite sash windows with glazing bars set in plain stone surrounds, and plain stone dividing mullions. The side lights of the centre window on the first floor are blocked. The central door opening is framed by a portico supported by six coupled Tuscan columns, which hold up a triangular pediment adorned with a patera. The projecting door opening is enclosed by ashlar and features a central half-glazed door with glazing bars, sidelights, and a decorated segmental fanlight above.

At the rear, there is a four-bay wing on the right side, which is two storeys high and has restored three-light stone mullioned windows with stopped labels. The interior includes late 18th-century features such as doors, shutters, and moulded cornices in several rooms. Notably, the left room on the ground floor has a fine marble fireplace with scroll decoration. The cantilever open well staircase features turned newels, plain balusters, a ramped handrail, and moulded head brackets.
