Description
Attached railings to numbers 5 and 7 are an early 18th-century house, now offices. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with Ham Hill stone dressings, topped with a slate roof and tall cream brick stacks to the gable ends. The building has a 2-unit plan, with a central stairhall and a longer rear service wing to the right, now known as number 7. The exterior is symmetrical with a 5-window range, excluding the service entrance. Features include a moulded cornice and parapet, rusticated quoins, a lead hopperhead and downpipe. A 6-panel door is located on the service wing (number 7) within a moulded architrave. The windows are 6/6-pane sashes with moulded architraves. A doorcase, with a 6-panel door, has fluted pilasters supporting a cornice and pediment. The interior was altered around 1840 and 1980. The original main staircase was removed during conversion to offices, but the 1840 service stairs, on the far right, remain. A room to the right incorporates a 1840 reeded cornice, embellished in the late 19th century, and elliptical-arched recesses flanking a former fireplace. This room's dado rail and architrave are from the early 18th century. The service wing's character is 19th century; one end room has a stone fire surround with a segmental arch, a dumb waiter to its left, and a late 19th-century built-in dresser. The attached spearhead railings are set on a Ham Hill stone plinth, flanking the doorway, curving forward to enclose the forecourts, then curving back again to meet the quoins. The railings are part of a group of early 18th-century town houses along Church Street.
