Description
Bryn-y-Don Calicut consists of farm buildings, likely originally linhays, which have been converted into two cottages. They probably date from the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The buildings are roughcast over cob on a rubblestone plinth, topped with a thatched roof that steps down over the cottage on the left. There are stacks at the rear left and right. Each cottage has a 1- and 2-unit plan, with a lean-to at the back; the lean-to for Calicut is made of cob and pantile, while Bryn-y-Don's is constructed from 19th-century rubblestone with a slate roof. The cottages are two storeys high and each has a two-window range, featuring 20th-century windows and doors. A door between the cottages leads to a through-passage, and to the right, the bays are defined by circular cob columns.
Inside, Calicut on the left has two chamfered cross-beams on the ground floor. Bryn-y-Don has a covered stud wall in the room to the right and also features two chamfered cross-beams. The circular columns between the bays are visible inside and match the local inlay construction style. The name Tythings Court suggests that this was historically the meeting place for the Minehead tything.
