Description

The Galhampton Winter chest tomb, located 4 metres west of the porch of the Church of St Mary, dates from the late 18th century. It is made of Ham stone with inserted marble panels. The tomb features a flat top with a roll-moulded cornice and a fluted frieze, which is accented by fluted pilasters at both the east and west ends, although the central panel at the east end is missing. The central panels on the north and south sides are flanked by plain chamfered panels, with the south panel also missing. It has a moulded plinth. The only inscription, found on the north side, commemorates Galhampton Winter, a gentleman who died in 1786, and his wife Susanna, who died in 1792.
