Description

The Catcott War Memorial is a village monument dating from around 1920. It is constructed of limestone and features an elaborate, crocketed head with statues, set on an octagonal shaft. The memorial stands on a square base with a plinth that has two steps leading up to a platform and border.

The gravelled platform is surrounded by a kerb, which includes taller corner and centre stones. On the front of the base, there is an inscription that reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL AND LOVING MEMORY / OF THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THE VILLAGE / OF CATCOTT WHO LAID DOWN THEIR / LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918." The reverse side bears the inscription, "THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE," while the names of the fallen are inscribed on the sides. The steps of the plinth feature a projecting chamfered moulding at the top.

The shaft tapers to an octagonal upper body and rises to a richly carved band, above which is the elaborate head of the monument. This head has an angled drum adorned with decorative horizontal bands. Two niches contain sculptures of servicemen: a soldier facing west and a sailor facing east. The niches are framed by cusped heads with crocketed finials surrounding the drum, topped with a carved foliate knop. At the bottom of the shaft, the years "1939 * 1945" are engraved, along with the names of the fallen from that conflict.
