Description

Bellfields is an 18th-century house located on Southgate Road in Wincanton. It is constructed of local stone rubble, which was formerly limewashed, and features a hipped plain clay tile roof with brick chimney stacks. The building has a T-plan layout and consists of two storeys with an attic, comprising eight bays. The windows are predominantly 2-light small-pane casements, many of which contain crown glass. The lower sections have exposed timber windows, and there are 20th-century French doors in the first bay. The fifth bay has a part-glazed four-panel door set within a 20th-century glass and timber porch, above which is a small oval window framed in rectangular stone. The attic includes dormer windows with timber pediments positioned to the right of the third and sixth bays. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain several scroll stop chamfered beams and roof trusses with collars that are roughly nailed on. The house has been disused since January 1984 and is situated within the grounds of the Unigate Milk Factory. It is believed that the name "Bellfields" comes from the site of a former bell foundry.
