Description
The Old Hall is a detached house dating from the 18th century, with some earlier fragments. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings. The roof is a clay pantile clad Mansard style, featuring stone slate base courses and coped gables, along with brick end chimney stacks. The building has a double roof plan and stands two storeys high with attics, comprising five bays.
The windows are sash style with 12 panes, set flush with the wall. The lower windows are positioned under a continuous string course, while the upper windows have timber lintels. There are two pitched roof dormer windows that feature the initials LOE/LOA in their pediments. A projecting stone open porch with solid sides is supported by Ionic columns that carry a full entablature, framing a tall six-panel door with a 'Y'-traceried toplight set in an architraved surround. On the south side, there is a projecting attic oriel window topped with a gabletted finial and weathervane.
The Old Hall has been known by this name since at least 1661 and may occupy the site of the former Hall of Pleas, as Somerton was the County Town of Somerset from 1278 to 1366.
